From Eyes to Glass to Aluminium: A History of Astronomy

Come to this free public lecture by a leading astronomer to share the history of astronomy from the first people to stare at the skies, to the handmade telescopes of Galileo, to the modern-day instruments probing the universe.
The lecture explores science as a human endeavour: from the first people to stare at the sky and wonder, the inventors who used glass to develop the telescope, to the engineers who put telescopes into space.
Highlighting the cultural and historical aspects of astronomy and the influence these have had on modern science, the lecture will bring to attention the future of STEM careers in astronomy with the imminent construction of the SKA-Low, the ground-breaking Western Australian radio telescope.
Dr Sabine Bellstedt, the dynamic 2021/22 Superstar of STEM and widely-published local ICRAR astrophysicist, will present this engaging interactive lecture for people of all ages who ever looked at the night sky and wondered what was out there.
