We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Dr Erica Smyth AC.

Dr Erica Smyth AC
Dr Erica Smyth was on the ICRAR Board from July 2016 – May 2020 and was a highly valued member of ICRAR.
She possessed a powerful, larger-than-life presence, the kind of personality that naturally commanded both respect and a sense of awe – something few people genuinely have. Her commitment to good governance, accountability, and transparency was unwavering.
The following reflection has been provided by Dr Renu Sharma, ICRAR’s former Chief Operating Officer and Director of Translation and Impact.
“I remember that in Board meetings she would, often quite suddenly, raise thoughtful and incisive questions to ensure we were fully across our policies, processes, and responsibilities. It was her way of making sure we upheld the highest possible standards, and it reflected not only her sharp mind but her deep care for the wellbeing and integrity of our team.
Before many meetings she would come to me early, seeking clarifications or asking for detailed background on Board papers, SKA matters, or broader ICRAR and WA developments. Those moments revealed her genuine curiosity and her sincere investment in the work we do.
I remain grateful for every opportunity I had to work with her, to support her, and to answer her questions. She made a lasting impact on all of us, and I will always remember her strength, her intellect, and her remarkable presence with deep respect and appreciation.”
The team at ICRAR would like to acknowledge the incredible impact that Dr Erica Smyth has had on our organsiation, and pay our respects to her family.
