ICRAR is pleased to announce it has been awarded an Inspiring Australia WA grant to deliver Midwest Star Trails – a series of free, community-focused astronomy events across the Mid West region of Western Australia during National Science Week 2025.

From August 6th to 11th, ICRAR will visit five regional towns—Morawa, Mullewa, Yalgoo, Cue, and Mount Magnet—bringing telescopes, a portable planetarium, and interactive science activities to local communities.

The events will offer immersive stargazing experiences, guided tours of the night sky, and engaging hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity and promote STEM learning.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear from Dr Ruby Wright, a leading local astrophysicist, who will speak about cosmic phenomena including the future collision between the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring astronomy and hands-on science experiences to regional communities across the Mid West,” said Leah Kalimeris, ICRAR’s Education & Outreach Coordinator.

“These events aren’t just about stargazing, they’re about sparking curiosity, building connections, and showing young people that science is for everyone, no matter where you live.”

“We’re deeply grateful to Inspiring WA for supporting this initiative. Their backing allows us to bring high-quality STEM experiences to communities that deserve more opportunities to engage with science and explore the universe around them.”

Alongside the community event series, ICRAR will also visit schools in Morowa, Mullewa and Yalgoo, and participate in  Mt Magnet’s Youth Science Day on August 12th, also supported by Inspiring WA.
