Compact Objects, and the Epoch of Reionisation

Content Compact objects are systems such as white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes. Neutron stars are routinely observed as radio pulsars, and black holes are detectable in the electromagnetic spectrum via emission from their accretion disks and jets. The electromagnetic emission from compact objects is observed to scintillate due to its passage through the intergalactic and/or interstellar medium of plasma. The study of electromagnetic wave propagation in the universe tells us both about the sources of the radiation and the intervening media. One of the most distant, non-compact sources of radiation in the universe is thought to originate in the Epoch of Reionisation. In this unit, the student will study the topics of (1) Pulsars, (2) Accretion Physics, (3) Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in the Universe, and the (4) Epoch of Reionisation.
