I describe measurements of the total amount of stars near the Sun, focusing on the total amount of matter they carry, and the total amount of light they emit.

Doing this in detail shows that we have a good understanding of the amount of visible matter around us in the Milky Way. The measurements lead to an estimate of the baryonic mass of the Milky Way, its luminosity in the optical, its mass to light ratio, the amount of visible matter compared to dark matter, and how it compares to its fellow spiral galaxies in the nearby universe.
