Much progress has been made in recent years in our understanding of the co-evolution of galaxies and AGN, and their connection to the underlying large-scale structure.

In this talk I will discuss simulation and modeling techniques that bridge theories of galaxy and quasar formation with the properties of observed galaxy populations. In addition, I will discuss a number of open questions important for extra-galactic astronomy and cosmology, and explain how future large-scale surveys and galaxy formation models may jointly address them.
