Astronomers argue that the Universe began with The Big Bang, which produced all the matter we see today. In the beginning this matter was evenly distributed, but slowly over time it was influenced by gravity to form the “chain galaxies” and “train-wrecks” of the early Universe and eventually the spectacular spirals we see today. Using inspiring images drawn from the Hubble Space Telescope and other leading facilities, Simon will explain what a galaxy is, the diversity that exists, and how their properties have changed with time and with the wavelength in which they are observed.
