The workshop "Widefield HI and Optical Surveys" is an invitation-only event for about 25 participants. It will be the second in a series of joint ICRAR/UCT workshops on HI survey synergies.
The topics to be discussed include HI widefield survey science (ASKAP, MeerKAT, APERTIF) and synergies with widefield optical surveys. The detailed agenda will reflect the ASKAP SSP outcomes.
Conference welcome and registration will be on the evening of Sunday 15 November. The workshop will start at 9 am on Monday 16 November and run through until 1 pm on Wednesday 18 November.
The workshop will be held at Quay West Resort Bunker Bay, in the south-west of Western Australia, on the edge of the beautiful Margaret River wine region, Geographe Bay, and the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park.
The programme for the meeting is now available (updated Nov 6). Please note that this is a preliminary timetable only, and should not be printed out for use at the meeting.
A block of rooms at has been set aside for the workshop, including twin shares for those wanting to reduce costs. The special conference price is $A175 per night for a studio villa (+$A25 pp for breakfast), and $A260 per night for a two bedroom villa (+$A25 pp for breakfast).
If you would like to stay longer than the workshop dates, you can make bookings at the same reduced rate within three days either side of workshop.
All participants (except ICRAR staff and students) should complete a booking form and should not book through the online booking facility available on the Bunker Bay website.
The best option for transport to and from Bunker Bay is hire car.
The resort is 275 km from the Perth international airport, where there are a number of car rental options. Please note that the new Perth-Bunbury freeway is now open, so beware of out-of-date maps! (new alignment: map 1 map 2)
Dunsborough is the nearest town to which public transport is available, 12 kilometres from the resort. TransWA provide a coach service through the town (SW1 from East Perth Station to Augusta/Pemberton, via Bunbury and Margaret River). This service operates twice a day Sunday to Friday (only one service back to Perth on Saturdays, with none in the other direction). The trip takes about 4.5 hours, and a return fare is $71.80 (adult). Bookings can be made using the journey planner on the TransWA website, where you'll also find the PDF for the timetable.
From Dunsborough you can catch a taxi with Dunsborough Taxis (phone (08) 9756 8688, or email). A cab from town to the Bunker Bay resort is approximately $25 during the day (add ~$5 for late night trips). Small buses can also be arranged with them if you are travelling in a large group. We may be able to shuttle a limited number of people from Dunsborough or Perth airport, so please contact the organisers if you believe you will need this service.
Owing to the small venue size, participation is by invitation only. The workshop fee will be covered by ICRAR and UWA sponsorship, and we anticipate that you will only have to pay for accommodation and transport.
Lunches and dinners on Monday and Tuesday will be provided. Please RSVP to Barbara Telfer by 15 September. After that time, your reserved accommodation is not guaranteed.
We highly recommend taking some extra time to see the local area. It is a beautiful region with much to offer. The Margaret River area includes excellent wine and food destinations, as well as great beaches (both swimming and surf), hiking, caves, forests, whales and other natural attractions.
