Seminar: Studies of the central region of the Galaxy using the GMRT

Dr Subhashis Roy

NCRA-TIFR, Pune University, India

This talk provides a summary of the observations carried out towards the Galactic centre (GC) region in different wavebands with the Giant Metrewave radio telescope (GMRT) in India leading to interesting results.

These include

  • Detection of Sgr A* at 610 MHz which provided its relative location with respect to the HII region Sgr A West,
  • HI absorption and distances of three non-thermal filaments in the region,
  • Confirmation of 13 supernova remnants (SNRs) in the GC region, which were earlier identified as candidate SNRs in the MOST 840 MHz GC survey, and
  • Detection of circularly polarised emission from the transient bursting radio source GCRT J1745-3009 at 325 MHz.

Time and Location

Date: 17th of June, 2010

Time: 3:30pm

Location: Seminar Room, Ground Floor, ICRAR UWA

Refreshments will be served on Level 2 after the talk
